What changes in AoW4 bricked the archetype: They had more penalties, no lifesteal, but they got the undead tag from the get go, which is important for spell and ability synergies * Your racial (think cultural) units already started as ghouls, which is equivalent to Wightborn. * Resurrect ability had two tiers: easily accessible lesser one, that only worked on chaff, and a harder to get greater one, that could revive any undead hero or unit * Undead had their own abilities and spells for healing and mind control - regular ones didn’t work on them and vice versa * A horde-gameplay class, that easily amassed troops by turning hostile undead to your side, resurrecting combatants either as cadavers (zombies) mid combat or as ghouls (wightborn) after combat ![]() I’ve seen people making good points about problems with Necromancy tomes, yet they miss the big picture here: it is merely a Necromancer Archetype from Age of Wonders 3, that was poorly translated into new game rules and modular format.
